Like André Derain

modern art reminds me of poetry.

both can be overt or clandestine—possessing a fantasy of untold connotations (depending on who’s paying attention)

in poetry, as in an abstract painting (or online dating I suppose), assuredly beauty is in the eye of the audience.

my mother encourages me that I am the Matisse of my generation of poets, ushering in a literary Fauvism—she implores me to imagine, create, and write with every discretionary moment.

my dad’s watching Cops and chimes in that my poetry is just like modern art...

most of it sucks.
