Duck
not an eagle or an owl
or any bird of prey
I will be the duck
that flies across my roof
some late afternoons
frantic for the pond
as if it suddenly feels
it’s missing out
has heard the tear of bread
or the sudden charge
from the far side of one
desperate to join the fleet
that idiot duck
calling quick quick quick
but in a heavy accent
like the pond is escaping
or is only created by
the bird’s unruly arrival
I will be that duck
in hysterical rush
belting out a line
creating my chances
coming in heels first
then calmly paddling on
