Fall 2021 Issue Cover Art

by Clare Owen
I came to The Maynard whilst looking at the notes for poetry submissions. I saw the simplicity of the brief for cover art and loved it. A few ideas instantly sprang to mind, but at that time, I’d been drawing a series of pieces on animals in vanishing environments. I started to think about extending the series with animals forced elsewhere, having to hide in plain sight. The idea of “hiding” a tiger in an orange came from the work on that series. Getting the shade of orange right was far trickier than I‘d imagined, but I really enjoyed the process.
