Stereotypes
I used to know another Andrew.
He would rap.
I would ‘slam’.
He was the only black boy in his school.
I was the only out, gay guy in my grade.
We used to joke,
To note how often
We are compared to our stereotyped celebrities.
How I was once an Anderson Cooper.
How he was called Kanye or Kendrick,
Depending on the day.
How black boys are said to be too violent, too often.
How queer kids are said to be too silent, too often.
He told me the first time someone called him the N word
He punched them “right in the face.”
I heard him call me Faggot.
I said nothing.
