Why Not
Two days of knocked down nests
squirrels chrsshing in the dark
a voice in the night saying what
the picnic shelter’s lightbulb star tenting
arms’ rise and fall
strings pulling
acrid cigar smoke unallowed
but such a wet night
who’d complain
black shining rain pools in light-absorbing small lakes
what can I do I’m sober and I pray
light-bronzed palm fronds the rain solders to the pavement
under packed L.A. clay so many buried bodies
mammoths and dire wolves
freed from rock or shale coffins is it oh Jesu the big one
from a text on coastal geography the long awaited
and definitive tectonic subduction
one shelf lifts another slides under disappearing
neatly as your please
the Pacific’s busy ha has mapping and remapping
the glance of water
