Today in the taxi when a wild HVAC truck cut me off, I thought of Mingus and how he managed his rising anger.
Everyone knows he put a shotgun hole in his ceiling when he was being evicted, and that he grabbed a fire axe to kill Juan Tizol who chased him down with a sharpened “Cuban frog sticker,” but what about in his private moments when he was asleep, or in the shower?
What remains is the timber of his bass melting in the black firmament of a fluid tunnel, and the black rose looking down on the mass of the earth.
